This quick-turnaround project for a remote-learning seminar for school-age children was a challenge on many levels. The client is part of the Colorado Center for the Blind in Littleton, Colorado; Proximity is indebted to the CCB for many years of help and friendship.
The low price point needed and the necessity for a short deadline made creating a dozen 165mm diameter globes an especially intense project.
We used a combination of mold making techniques to make this custom design come to life. The raised lines show the equator and prime meridian. There is a raised cap at the north pole and an indent at the south pole for easy orientation as well as a future stand to hold the globes at the appropriate angle.
Below are some production photographs.
These are links to the Design for All magazine article that Proximity's Matt Gesualdi co-wrote with Daniel Griner of Denver University. We enjoyed sharing our knowledge and opinions about letting people touch tactile museum exhibits during and post COVID-19. The first link is just for our article and the second link is for the entire magazine. Enjoy the read.
Our last pandemic experiment was to bring tactile life to something from our childhood. Astérix & Obélix books kept us entertained as well as keeping our French and Latin up-to-date. The iconic two pages of the books were our only objectives. Please note, Proximity is not licensed by Dargaud.
