Denver Art Museum — Designing for Accessibility

Designing with people, not for them.

Eleven community partners with lived experience of disability helped define what accessible exhibition seating should be. Proximity guided the co-design process and carried those requirements from conversation through design, prototyping and fabrication.

Rembrandt: Painter as Printmaker

Accessibility sometimes requires translation, not replication.

How do you touch something too small even to see clearly? Proximity translated microscopic printmaking techniques into enlarged tactile and multisensory experiences that blind and sighted museum visitors could explore.

Mission to Nocterra Pitch-Black Puzzle Room

What happens when an experience doesn't require sight at all?

Proximity led the development of a full-scale, pitch-black puzzle experience where blind and sighted participants shared the same challenge. Continuous feedback from blind participants shaped the experience throughout development.

There's more to explore.

Tactile maps, museum interpretation, multisensory exhibits, educational tools, and interactive experiences.
